Commvault Intros Disaster Recovery In The Cloud

As more organizations are choosing to move their data to public and hybrid clouds, Commvault is stepping in with a number of new and improved solutions to enable large-scale disaster recovery in the cloud. With a focus on cloud automation and orchestration, the DR tool offers migrations as well as backup and archive capabilities, emphasizing giving customers choice and flexibility.

In addition to the newly released Commvault Cloud Disaster Recovery tool, the company introduced updates to its cloud development and testing product, cloud gateway and replication in the cloud.

Commvault's Cloud Disaster Recovery tool is a targeted solution for DR that includes cloud automation and orchestration capabilities. The tool is currently integrated into Microsoft's Azure, but it works with any hypervisor, including Hyper-V, KVM, Xen and VMware's vSphere, to offer automatic or scheduled restores with no manual processes involved.

"Our solutions make it much easier for customers to derive value from their cloud investments, by deeply integrating the on-premises and in-cloud infrastructure, starting with the data and then extending out to controlling access and optimizing utilization," Sabrinath Rao, Sr. director of the cloud business unit at Commvault told Tom's IT Pro in an interview.

Commvault is planning to integrate with Amazon's AWS in the near future, Rao told us, but integrating with Azure is a starting point. However, the current processes are the same for public and hybrid cloud scenarios and will remain the same as more public cloud solutions are integrated. Commvault's software-only solution is also OS- and storage-agnostic, and ideal for multi-site deployments, Rao explained.

Commvault's Cloud Deployment and Test solution includes two UI choices, one a granular option for power users and the other a web-based, self-service portal for end users. Both utilize role-based access control (with Active Directory/LDAP). The dev and test tool combines virtual machine provisioning and workflows, allowing for improved management and control of test environments in the cloud.

The software-based cloud gateway tool is designed to improve the agility, flexibility and performance of cloud backups. Finally, the cloud replication component is focused on giving Commvault customers flexibility in how their data gets to the cloud.

Commvault's new and improved cloud disaster recovery, dev and test, gateway, and replication offerings are available today. For more information visit commvault.com.
